Week5
Introduction to
IT and ICT
Lecture
6/11/2012
Assalamu a’laikum! And very good morning to everyone!
Up till now is week 5 personal reflections. Back to the lecture
note, this week we studied about IT and ICT lesson. Before I learned this
lesson, I thought that IT and ICT are the same. Actually they are very
different.
This is a very important
and interesting lesson. Getting to know what is IT and ICT? What is the
difference of IT and ICT? How to identify that function of IT, ICT in an
organization to manage the information system?
Definition of IT (Information Technology)
IT (Information Technology) is a term
that encompasses all forms of technology used to create, store, exchange, and
use information in its various forms.
IT also is any
computer-based tool that people used to work with information and to support
the information and information-processing needs of an organization. Example:
telecommunication products (telephone), information kiosk, World Wide Web site,
multimedia, and office equipment such as copier, printer, fax machine and
medical equipment.
There are two type of IT concept;
1.
IT Architecture: is a map plan of the information assets in an
organization.
Integrates entire
organization’s business needs for information, infrastructure and applications.
2.
IT Infrastructure: The physical facilities, IT components, IT
services, and IT personnel that support an entire organization.
a)
IT component; hardware, software, & communication technology
b)
IT service: service provide for people/ customer
IT personnel:
people/individual works with IT & IS
Now
let have a look at the Definition of ICT;
ICT
(Information and Communication Technology) refers to technologies that provide
access to information through telecommunication. It is similar to Information Technology (IT), but focuses primarily on
communication technologies. This includes the Internet, wireless networks, cell
phones, and other communication mediums. It is similar to IT,
but it focuses on communication technologies includes the Internet, wireless
networks, cell phone and other communication mediums.
ICT USE IN DAILY LIFE
The use of ICTs in Education:

Class
activities
Students are formed a group by sitting in the same country mates to discuss
on ICT use in daily life. My group is Cambodian and the topic to discuss is the
use of ICT in industry to manufacture products in my country. After discussion,
we all have to present it.
ICT Used in Banking
Benefits of ICT in banking:
a)
convenience
b)
improved service/ customer access to meet customer needs
c)
cost and time effectiveness
d)
wider networking
ICT use in Business
ICT can be used to communicate:
·
between individuals
·
between individuals and organizations
·
between a business and external organization
Example: Mobile phones, video and tele-conferencing, laptop computer,
multimedia communications and e-business.
·
Information System
In this week we also learned about information system (IS)
1. Definition of IS
Information system is an application of computer based Information Technology (combination of hardware, software, infrastructure, and trained personnel) used to facilitate planning, control, coordination, and decision making in an organization.
Information system
in organization
COMPONENTS OF CBIS
a.
HARDWARE
Consists of computer
equipment used to perform input, processing and output activities.
b.
SOFTWARE
Consist of
computer programs that govern the operation of the computer.
Finance
software: process payroll, send bills to customers, provide managers with
information to increase profit, reduce costs and provide better customer
service.
c.
DATABASE
A database is an organized
collection of interrelated data (records) - records can be retrieved
easily.
d. PEOPLE
Who are:
·
Manage system
·
Run
·
Program
·
Maintain system
e. Procedure
Strategies, policies, methods and rules for
using computer information system including operation, security and maintenance
of the computer.
For Example:
some procedures describe when each program should be run.
f.
TELECOMMUNICATIONS, NETWORK AND INTERNET
Telecommunications: Electronic transmission of signals for
communications which enables organizations to carry out their processes and
task through effective computer networks.
Networks: connect computers and
equipment in a building, around the country or around the world to enable
electronic communication.
Internet:
World’s largest computer network actually consisting of thousands of
interconnected networks all freely exchanging information.
Types of Information System
The are four types of IS:
- TPS (Transactional Processing System)
- MIS (Management Information System)
- DSS (Decision Support System)
- ESS (Execute Support System)
- ES (Expert System)Other IS (Office Support system,
knowledge work system.. )
Example of IS: In Accounting they use Auditing system, Health care they use Experts system, Finance they use payroll system..
